Cogent practices net neutrality. We do not prioritize packet transmissions on the basis of the content of the packet, the customer or network that is the source of the packet, or the customer or network that is the recipient of the packet. Where there are network problems such as congestion at interconnection points or fiber cuts we implement network management tools to minimize harm to the users of our network.
Please see our US Open Internet Access Disclosure and our EU Open Internet Access Disclosure.
Our network is layer-3-protected and built in a series of rings. In the event of a fiber cut, data is rerouted away from the cut, reaching the customer from the other direction and keeping customer connected. We proactively monitor customer services from our Network Operations Centers (located in Frankfurt, Germany; Madrid, Spain and Paris, France) and answers support calls quickly, averaging fewer than 25 seconds. We have the ability to shift our NOC operations to a fully remote status in the event necessary. Local support teams and online account management are available 24x7x365.
Our network, like other packet switched networks has the ability to dynamically re-route traffic based on existing traffic conditions. We have adequate capacity across most spans in our network to allow routing algorithms to automatically reroute traffic around disruptions such as fiber optic cable cuts or equipment failures. Our systems automatically measure packet loss and latency across the network as well as span utilization. In the event that traffic does not re-route automatically we have the ability to remotely route traffic to under-utilized spans using traffic engineering tunnels.
